Calls for service
For the period of Jan. 29 to Feb. 4, the Niagara Falls Fire Department responded to 88 calls.
• ALARM: At 10:20 p.m. Jan. 29, firefighters were dispatched to a structure in the 400 block of 20th Street for some type of alarm sounding. Upon arrival, firefighters found a vacant home with what appeared to be a smoke alarm sounding from within. Once inside firefighters found no evidence of smoke or a fire but did find an active water leak in the building. Firefighters were able to secure the leak but not before the water caused substantial damage. The home ,which was recently up for auction, was secured.
• INCIDENT: Firefighters from LaSalle area companies were alerted to respond to a suspected structure fire just after 9 p.m. Saturday. The caller did not have an exact address but did report smoke coming from a white building located at 80th Street and Buffalo Avenue. Firefighters arrived and determined that there was no fire problem. The source of the “smoke” was actually steam related to a malfunctioning water heater.
• ASSAULT: Just after 1 a.m. Sunday, firefighters assigned to the 72nd Street station responded to the 7200 block of Niagara Falls Boulevard for a medical emergency. Upon arrival, department EMTs were confronted with an adult male who had serious facial trauma. The assault victim, who appeared to have been struck in the upper body with a tire iron, sustained significant lacerations to his face and eyes. Department members bandaged the injuries and prepared the patient for transport to a medical facility.
• ACCIDENT: The 1200 block of Hyde Park Boulevard was the scene of an early afternoon incident involving an automobile and a pedestrian. At 12:33 p.m. Wednesday, firefighters from the Royal Avenue station responded and found one patient alert and conscious after being struck by an automobile. The patient complained of severe pain to his side as firefighters began treatment. The patient was immobilized to prevent any additional injury and was transported to a local hospital.
• NOTES: Sooner or later it will probably happen to you. An inevitable emergency will occur, and you’ll need an ambulance, fire equipment or a police officer. How do you contact the right person?
Just dial 9-1-1 from the nearest telephone. Do not waste precious seconds by calling your local fire or police station. You will get a much quicker response to your emergency needs by dialing 9-1-1. Please remember, 9-1-1 is only for emergencies. When your call is received, highly trained personnel are ready to respond with assistance and will get you the help you need. Please follow these simple guidelines:
• Stay calm: Dispatchers can’t help you if they can’t understand you. Take a deep breath and think before you talk. Speak slowly and clearly.
• State the nature of the emergency and the exact address where the help is needed. Stay on the line to answer further questions the dispatcher may have.
• Send someone to meet the emergency equipment if at all possible. It’s hard to find an address on a dimly lit street in the middle of the night.
