CWM fundraiser recipients announced

16 organizations will get a share of an expected $300,000 to be raised in September

LEWISTON — It took close to two months, heated public debate and several public votes and now Chemical Waste Management has announced that 16 different entities will be recipients of funding coming from a national fundraising golf tournament.

With nearly $300,000 expected to be raised, the hazardous waste landfill located in the Town of Porter, outlined a long list of nonprofits, community groups and municipalities to receive a still undetermined amount of money.

“Each of these organizations will apply their allocated funds to projects that will enhance their facilities, programs and operations,” said Lori Caso,  Waste Management community and municipal relations manager. “We are pleased to be supporting their efforts toward the benefit of this community.”

Last year, the company raised nearly $200,000 for the benefit of charitable organizations in Broward County, Fla., including the YMCA and Big Brothers Big Sisters. This year the event is being held at the Niagara Falls Country Club and will host around 150 executives representing a variety of corporations throughout the U.S. The event is scheduled for Sept. 15 and 16.

The Town of Lewiston and the Lewiston-Porter Central School District publicly voted to turn down funding from the golf tournament, as both entities are on record opposing the expansion of the Balmer Road’s landfill operations.

In 2003, Waste Management submitted an application for expansion of the hazardous waste landfill. CWM’s application for expansion is currently on hold because state regulators have not established a set of guidelines for the disposal of toxic waste in New York. The 710-acre site actively operates in a 47-acre landfill known a RMU-1 and is seeking to expand to a 50-acre landfill known as RMU-2.

School and town officials argued the donations were being used in an effort to improve CWM’s application in the eyes of the Department of Environmental Control and a subsequent siting board, both of which would be charged with the task of approving the expansion.

“Waste Management is committed to supporting on many levels the local communities in which it operates,” Caso said. “Our charitable golf tournament is nationally recognized and we are pleased to be hosting this significant event in Niagara County.”
