LEWISTON —
The Lewiston Town Board could soon approve the purchase of some new highway equipment with the help of a state grant.
Highway Superintendent Doug Janese approached the board with the idea of using a Department of Environmental Conservation grant to purchase some much-needed tandem trucks.
“My equipment isn’t getting any younger,” Janese said. “It’s costly to repair. Supervisor (Steve) Reiter previously approached the board in 2007 about replacing these two tandem trucks and nothing was done then.”
According to Bernie Rotella, the town’s grant writer, any equipment purchased through the grant would receive 50 percent compensation. He said purchases as far back as two years ago could be applied to the grant, however any purchase must be used for recycling purposes.
Rotella said the tandem trucks could be used to haul brush which could be considered recycling. He also said used purchases are just as eligible as new trucks, which Janese said is the ideal situation.
“I don’t need anything that’s shiny,” Janese said. “We need something that’s functional. We need something that’ll do the job.”
Janese said his oldest trucks are 22 and 21 years old, while other towns usually replace their equipment after about ten years.
The board directed Janese and Rotella to develop a specific number to apply for the grant, but wouldn’t commit to approving any application.
“We don’t have enough information yet,” Councilman Ernie Palmer said. “I’d like to find out a little bit more if I can. It’s nice we have grant money available to us, but it’s not free. We have a budget to worry about too.”
Janese said he’d develop the numbers and have a general price list available for the board soon.
In other town news, the board approved approximately $1.7 million in bonding for projects involving water and sewer improvements Monday.
Among the projects, Sanborn sewers are set to receive an upgrade with a plan to install new piping below Buffalo Street and Saunders Settlement and Ward roads for approximately $500,000.
