Jean Evelyn Tower Lassiter

Jean Evelyn Tower Lassiter, 92, died at her residence at Cypress Glen in Greenville, NC after a long illness. She was a native of Youngstown, NY; the daughter of Mary Belle and Ray C. Tower. She was the widow of William Lockwood Lassiter of Elizabeth City, NC. She is survived by her daughter, Gail Lassiter Young of New Bern, NC and son, CL Lassiter of Carrboro, NC. Additionally, she is survived by her nieces, Mary Ann Rolland or Youngstown, NY, Harriet “Skeeter” Tower of Youngstown, NY, Bettina Deters of Sarasota, FL and a nephew, Gary Brown of Penney Farms, FL.

She was valedictorian of her high school class and received her nursing (RN) degree from the University of Rochester in New York. A woman ahead of her time, she received a pilot’s license and logged 58 hours of flying time before joining the Army Air Corps. During World War II, she was an Army Air Corps flight nurse who achieved the rank of Captain before her honorable discharge. Following her stint in the Army Air Corps, she used the GI Bill to pay for her graduate education at Columbia University in New York, where she received the degree of Master of Public Health in Public Health Nursing.

Upon moving to North Carolina in 1958, she used her nursing skills for the NC Board of Health, ultimately being promoted to Public Health Director for the northeastern area of NC before retiring. After retirement, she settled with her husband in New Bern, NC.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her name to the donors’ local hospice, food bank, Habitat for Humanity, or to the hospital which she contributed to during her lifetime: Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, 1275 York Ave., New York, New York 10065.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday January 22, 2008 at the Pollock-Best Funeral Home Chapel, 2015 Neuse Blvd., New Bern, NC. Following the service, the family will greet friends and family. Interment will be in Northridge cemetery in Cambria, NY.
