Old Fort Niagara hosting Twelfth Night Ball

Niagara Gazette — Old Fort Niagara will recreate one of the most festive events of the holiday season on Saturday evening when the historic site presents its annual Twelfth Night Ball.

The event will feature 18th and early 19th century country dancing, live music, period refreshments, games and entertainment.

Historically, twelfth night celebrations marked Epiphany, the end of the twelve days of Christmas. Early Americans marked the occasion with feasting and dancing, a tradition that continues at Old Fort Niagara.

Tickets to the event are $40 per person and must be purchased in advance by calling 745-7611. The ball, held at the Fort Niagara Officers Club, begins at 7 p.m. and concludes about 11:15 p.m.

A dancing master will teach newcomers so no previous country dancing experience is needed.

This year’s event attainted national recognition, when Early American Life magazine featured it in their recent Christmas edition.

Old Fort Niagara in Youngstown opens at 9 a.m. daily and is open until 5 p.m. during the winter months.

Old Fort Niagara is a National Landmark and State Historic Site operated by the Old Fort Niagara Association (a not-for-profit organization) in cooperation with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation.

The best advice I can give for developing an understanding of the connectivity among all the motion pictures and television programs is to take them one at a time. You'll slowly see how interwoven everything is. Of course, understanding doesn't necessarily have to mean appreciating.
