Niagara Gazette — Chris Trapper’s mom would have loved to see him play at the Historic Palace Theater on Friday.
Trapper, who usually performs at Buffalo’s Babeville a couple times a year, is looking to move to bigger venues and his mom, a Lockport resident, was excited to see him perform at Lockport’s most historic venue. Unfortunately, she died in August. But Trapper says he knows she’ll be there in spirit when he performs the show he’s been taking around the country.
It’s a show, he says that is both intimate, inspirational, honest and intense, with a weaving of humor throughout.
“I do a mix of standup comedy meets pure singer songwriter … I describe what my songs are about, where they come from, and what inspired them,” said Trapper. “Even for someone who doesn’t know the songs, I try to tie it into something they might recognize in their own lives.”
Trapper, who lives in Boston, was raised in Buffalo and went to Amherst Central High School. He moved to New England to find fame and fortune, and has had some pretty impressive successes, including having written songs for a handful of movies from “There’s Something about Mary” to “August Rush” to “The Devil Wears Prada.”
His roadshow includes his songs from a variety of genres, from rock to jazz to country.
“What most challenges me is how to be one guitar and one voice on stage and keep it interesting,” he said. “That’s become what I love most about my job. And I’ve learned to do it well.”
While he’s hoping many of the folks who have come regularly to see his Buffalo shows make the trip to Lockport, he’s looking forward to playing in front of extended family members including his dad, and a sister and brother and their families. Either way, the show is going to be the same.
“I’ve played festivals with 18,000 people and in a living room with one couple,” he explained. “I’ve learned a lot of tricks about how to make it interesting, that’s the fun part. It actually works best in a theater setting.”
