Niagara Art Trail Holiday Weekend starts Friday

Niagara Gazette — Follow the path of the Niagara Art Trail’s Holiday Weekend, being held from Friday through Sunday.

Open houses will be held at nine area galleries, studios and shops. This year’s Art Trail stops include: The Penney Gallery/Erie Canal Discovery Center, Dale Association, Donald E. Little Studio, Gallery DiMaggio, Kenan Center, Market Street Art Center, all in Lockport; Kathleen Giles Studio in Gasport, Shoppe on Main in Newfane, and the Lamp Lighter Art Gallery in Middleport. Admission to all stops on the trail is free with the exception of the Kenan Center, which charges $3 to help cover the cost of its programs.

Attendees are welcome to meet artists, browse artwork, and purchase art. Daily hours vary by stop, but are available in a free, 24-page full color Niagara Art Trail guide. This guide contains information and maps about the Holiday Weekend, as well as information about many events happening throughout the Niagara region during the holiday season. Guide books are available at many area businesses including: Niagara History Center, Market Street Art Center, Erie Canal Discovery Center, Palace Theatre, Kenan Center and Newfane’s Shoppe on Main. You can also download your copy at NiagaraArtTrail.com.

Again this year, the Penney Gallery, 24 Church St., is the “home base” or information center for the Art Trail’s Holiday Weekend, and it is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. all three days. The Lockport Visitors’ Center is also housed in this historic old church, which dates to 1843 and was constructed from stone which was excavated at the time of the construction of the canal.

Several local artists will also once again display their work at the Discovery Center. These artists do not have studios or galleries of their own, so they have selected several pieces to display at the center, where the second floor will be transformed into a gallery to showcase their art. Many items will be available for purchase, and several artists will be on hand throughout the weekend to greet visitors and talk about their artwork.

The best advice I can give for developing an understanding of the connectivity among all the motion pictures and television programs is to take them one at a time. You'll slowly see how interwoven everything is. Of course, understanding doesn't necessarily have to mean appreciating.
