TELEVISION: Ready for final season of 'Lost'

By Hannah Finlayson

With the fifth season of “Lost,” viewers anticipated — as they always do — having more questions than answers at the end of the season. Season five did not disappoint.

While fans have been able to put some major pieces together, they still wonder how “Lost” producers will be able to tie all the loose ends together. To help you catch up, while we wait for the rest of the answers, here are a few questions that have been answered.

(Ed. note: A word of advice: If you’re not a “Lost” fan, when reading this, you may feel completely ... well, lost.)

What happened in the past to Danielle Rousseau’s team? What did Rousseau mean when she said they got “sick?”

During season five, as the island is time traveling, Jin Kwon discovers the mystery behind Danielle Rousseau. A member of Rousseau’s team, Montand, had his arm ripped off by the smoke monster. He was then taken down to into the temple by the monster. The team has no idea of what to do when Montand states calmly that the monster is gone and he needs help. This should have been a warning signal to the team; Montand’s arm was ripped off his body and he is rationally and calmly asking for help. Everyone, except Rousseau — who is pregnant with Alex at the time — ventures into the temple to try and help Montand. A few months after the Montand-smoke monster incident, Rousseau has killed everyone from her team as they had gone crazy.

Who is Eloise Hawking, the creepy old British woman who for some reason has connections to the island?

She’s Daniel Faraday’s mother (his father is Charles Widmore). Perhaps one of the most confusing characters, Eloise Hawking used to live on the island during World War II. She was there when she and Widmore were young, when the nuclear bomb was buried in the ground.

Eloise also has ties to Ben Linus, which is bizarre — Widmore is her baby’s daddy and the two men hate each other. Eloise is the one who pushes Ben to get the Oceanic Six (Jack Shepard, Kate Austin, Hurley Reyes, Sayid Jarrah, Sun Kwon and baby Aaron) to get on a plane that will take them back to the island.

In addition to Eloise being Daniel’s mother, consider that we have never met Penny’s mom. Could it be Eloise?

Who is Jacob?

In the season five finale, we learn the mysterious Jacob has visited every member of the Oceanic Six. When Kate Austin is a little girl, she steals candy from a store. Jacob saves her from trouble and buys it for her. When he gives her the candy he warns her to never steal again. Jacob also meets up with a young Sawyer giving him a pen at his parent’s funeral, which Sawyer then uses to write a letter to the man responsible for his parents’ death. When Locke falls out of the window, Jacob walks over to his crumpled body, and when Jacob touches him, Locke’s eyes open and Jacob apologizes. Jacob congratulates Jin and Sun Kwon on their wedding day and wishes them happiness; Jacob is also fluent in Korean. Jack meets Jacob after being reprimanded by his father while performing surgery. To help soothe the emotionally-wounded Jack, Jacob treats him with an Apollo Bar. And finally, Jacob reveals himself to Hurley in a cab. Jacob tells Hurley that he must go back to the island and he also leaves Charlie’s guitar case in Hurley’s possession to take on the plane.

As quickly as we get to really know Jacob, he is done away with, killed by Ben Linus. His last words? “They’re coming.”

What lies in the shadow of the statue?

Richard Alpert knows. And he responds to the question in Latin. (It translates to “He/that which will save/protect us all.”) The Latin suggests that Richard has been around for a long time. Also, it might be connected to the giant statue which only has four toes ... similar to how everyone is almost certain that Richard has four toes. Is Richard the human embodiment of the island?
