Niagara Gazette — A special arrangement made prior to the opening of an exhibit this weekend at the Niagara Arts and Cultural Center will result in the enhancement of the center's Main Gallery.
It's quite a unique arrangement, according to Bob Drozdowski, director of operations and marketing at the NACC. In place of charging the customary rental fee for hosting an event the NACC has accepted payment from the BSA in the form of a renovation project.
The Buffalo Society of Artists will reconstruct the hanging walls of the Main Gallery at the center, enhancing hanging space in the gallery, Drozdowski said, adding that the marble walls of the gallery of the former cafeteria made it somewhat challenging for artists to hang their work.
“The BSA sent in a volunteer crew and within a week constructed new 8-foot hanging walls on the perimeter of the gallery to make it a state-of-the-art gallery exhibit space. The walls are movable giving the gallery more flexibility to arrange exhibitions as needed and in a more professional manner,” said Drozdowski.
Gary Wolfe, president of the BSA, a NACC studio tenant and the key catalyst in getting the project completed, calls it a win-win situation.
“The main gallery at the NACC has plenty of space to hang work where it’s now going to look very, very good. The BSA is always interested in collaborating with other groups in the area to make more of a public presence in the community,” he said.
The BSA will hold it 116th Annual Catalogue Exhibition at the NACC. The society, which has been working with artists since 1891 to promote and expand their artistic expressions throughout the community in Western New York, currently has over 225 member artist members and associates who work collaboratively to mount two main shows annually and participate in lectures, workshops and studio visits throughout the year.
The exhibition will display 50 pieces of artwork that were juried in by the prominent art figure Sandra Q. Firmin, a curator at UB Art Galleries, who picked which pieces would be included in the show based on the technical skill, creativity, and medium of the artwork. Viewers can expect a varied collection of drawings, paintings, sculptures, photography, and digital art on display.
“The diversity of the art scene here in WNY is fascinating and incredibly rich. Niagara County especially has so much potential and a lot of great resources that residents might not be aware of. I hope folks come out and support artists at the exhibition and that it stirs up some of their interests,” said Wolfe.
The opening reception will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday. The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be provided and live music will be performed by the jazz guitar duo Pro Bono. Gallery goers may enter through the double red doors on the Portage Road entrance.
