THE ROUNDUP: Exhibit showcases Canadian artists
As any regular reader knows, The Roundup and its parent, Night and Day, are heavily invested in Western New York and U.S.-side attractions at Niagara Falls. That’s just who we are and where we play.
But Lockport’s Kenan Center deserves a hand for its efforts, which recently netted the gallery an award from the Binational Tourism Alliance, the first given to a nonprofit. And now, continuing for a fourth year, the gallery will exhibit the best works of fine artists living just North of our bridges.
“Crossing Borders” showcases the work of 25 Canadians, from five provinces, working in everything from photography to sculpture to etching and beyond. The vast majority are established artists with regular exhibitions across the region, and a handful have only rarely made it to this side of the border, despite recogntion in Canada.
The exhibit runs through Oct. 14, with the gallery at 433 Locust St. open noon to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 2 to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. For more information, check out kenancenter.org or call 433-2617.
Niagara University’s 2007-08 season kicks off with a low-key but humorous reader’s theatre rendition of “I’m Peggy Guggenheim and You’re Not” at Lewiston’s The Church this Friday.
The play, directed by local actress and NU Theater alumnus Maureen Anne Porter, chronicles (and, in some ways, parodies) the life of heiress and scene-maker Peggy Guggenheim, who knew everyone who was anyone in early 20th-century Europe and collected museums worth of great works.
Written by award-winning playwright Wendy Yondrof, author of “A Space Between Trees,” the play is the second directorial effort of Porter, who also helmed 2005’s “Lovers” and starred in last year’s original production “Letters Home from Niagara.’
Readers theatre renditions will be offered at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, with a 2 p.m. matinee planned for Sunday, at The Church, 415 Plain St., Lewiston. Tickets are $14 general admission, $12 for seniors and children 18 and younger.
