HIGGS: Discussing crime and punishment in the Falls
Have to take a detour off Pine Avenue in 1956 this week to report on an event held by the Niagara Falls Block Club Council for its member clubs and other interested citizens.
-
HIGGS: Family stories and a slow start to the 1800 block
I heard from a couple of my readers who added a few tidbits that I did not know about their families.

HIGGS: The changing face of Pine Avenue
Well, we finally made it to the even side of Pine in the 1700 block. Will we ever reach the Como? It has been a happy journey for me as I have met lots of new people and heard from old friends as well. Memories bring out the best in us but most realize times have changed and they have moved on in reality but not in their hearts.

HIGGS: A few local insights and more on Pine Avenue
Well, last week certainly brought out the best in everyone. I received lots of phone calls and emails and the best one was the comment “I love the fact that Dr. Merletti renovated a former shoe repair shop for his podiatry practice.”

HIGGS: World entrepreneurs with Falls connections
I attended the City Council meeting on Jan. 2 to witness our new city leaders take their oath of office and I met a friend and prominent local podiatrist, Dr. Henry Merletti as he was leaving.

HIGGS: Another year rings in and I go back to 1956
It is now 2012 and I can’t believe I have been doing these columns for six years as I started in January of 2006 at the request of then Niagara Gazette editor David Arkin when I complained about the lack of publicity for coming events in Niagara Falls. He said “Why don’t you write a column each week to highlight some of these.”

HIGGS: Boxing Day and 1956 Pine Avenue shopping
Christmas is over and today is Boxing Day. I decided to see what it is all about before we continue on Pine Avenue in 1956.
-
HIGGS: Pine Avenue offered a variety of businesses
Pine Avenue in the 1950s was like a great big mall of stores where almost everything could be bought or sold. Since many of the Italian families were related and most lived in the approximate area, it is not hard to imagine they were all pretty successful business people. They supported one another.
-
HIGGS: A trip down memory lane along Pine Avenue
Nicholas J. Meranto lived at 1246 Pine Ave. and owned and operated the Giant Food Market which was a general grocery, produce and meat store with its main “address” at 736 19th St. but the main “entrance” was in the City Market sitting between chicken and fish markets.

HIGGS: As Chella steps down — Hail to the chief!
When Niagara Falls Police Superintendent John Chella called me a few weeks ago to tell me he was retiring at the end of the year, my reaction was “why does this not surprise me.”
