NIAGARA FALLS —
The Niagara men’s basketball team suffered through its most lopsided loss in over a decade on its worst offensive night in almost a century.
The Purple Eagles missed 17 straight shots over 12 minute span in the first half Tuesday on their way to an 84-39 to Drexel in Philadelphia.
The 39 points scored is Niagara’s lowest since a 59-38 loss to St. Francis (N.Y.) on Jan. 27, 1964.
The 45-point margin of defeat is the largest since a 115-70 loss at St. John’s on Jan. 4, 1999.
Niagara (3-10) shot 15 percent from the field in the first half and trailed 44-15 at halftime. For the game, Niagara shot 29 percent and made just one 3-point field goal.
Drexel (9-2) shot better than 54 percent for the game and assisted on 28 of its 37 made field goals. The Dragons topped 80 points for the first time all year despite going just 2 for 6 from the free throw line.
Anthony Nelson scored 14 points to lead the Purple Eagles, who play at winless Maryland-Baltimore County on Thursday.

Eastern Michigan 89, Niagara 34
The lady Purple Eagles actually had a more inept evening than their male counterparts.
The point total was Niagara’s lowest since a 64-25 loss to Canisius in 1976, and the lowest ever by a Division I team playing at the 12-year-old Convocation Center in Ypsilanti, Mich.
The 55-point margin of defeat was Niagara’s worst since a 116-50 loss at Michigan State on Nov. 14, 2008.
The Purple Eagles (1-10) shot 19 percent from the field and turned the ball over 31 times.

Paul Zanette had a goal and assist while goaltender Chris Noonan made 29 saves to propel the Niagara University men’s hockey team to a critical 3-0 victory over Canisius at the Buffalo State College Sports Complex.

Niagara sank into last place in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference with a 51-49 loss at Manhattan, which came into the game on a 15-game losing streak Monday. And that was hardly the most ominous news to come out of the lost weekend, which also included Saturday’s setback at Saint Peter’s.
