MEN'S HOCKEY: Late goal sinks NU again

Staff Report

POTSDAM — For the second time in as many starts, the Niagara men’s hockey team gave up a late goal that cost them a good result.

After holding a 4-1 lead over Colgate in last week’s opener, then ending with a 4-4 draw, the Purple Eagles gave up a goal with just 4:16 left on Friday, falling by a 4-3 count to Clarkson in a non-league game at Cheel Arena.

Tyler Gotto and Paul Zanette scored in the second period for Niagara (0-1-1), giving the visitors a 2-1 lead, but Clarkson responded with two late goals in the second to take the lead into intermission.

Niagara got even again in the third as Sam Goodwin scored an unassisted goal, but Matt Beca scored with just over four minutes to play to give Clarkson (1-2-0) the victory.

Adam Avramenko made 30 saves for Niagara.

The Purple Eagles now make the short trek to St. Lawrence tonight.
