BASKETBALL: NU legend Layden hospitalized

Frank Layden, the former Niagara University basketball player, coach and athletics director, admitted himself into a Salt Lake City hospital last week for an undisclosed condition, the Salt Lake Tribune reported Monday.

A Utah Jazz spokesman told the newspaper that Layden, 77, was in good spirits and will likely be released from the hospital sometime this week.

Layden played for Niagara from 1951 to 1952, then coached the Purple Eagles from 1968 to 1976, guiding the team to the NCAA Tournament once, and the NIT twice. He spent more than two decades working for the Utah Jazz before retiring as team president in 1998. He coached the Jazz for seven seasons, claiming the NBA Coach of the Year award in 1984.

Layden's son, Scott, is now an assistant coach with the Jazz.
