Hilda Wieland Schoonover

LEWISTON —  

Hilda Wieland Schoonover, 95, formerly of Lewiston, NY, passed away on Saturday, November 10, 2012. Mrs. Schoonover was a lifetime member of the First Presbyterian Church of Lewiston, NY. Elkins Funeral Home in Florence, AL and Hardison Funeral Home in Lewiston, NY are coordinating arrangements. Memorial services will be held in the Old Stone Church on Monday, November 19, 2012, at 11:00 AM with Rev. Robert Bellingham officiating. Burial will follow at Cold Springs Cemetery in Lockport, NY. 
Mrs. Schoonover graduated from Buffalo State Teachers College in Buffalo, NY, with majors in history, English, psychology, and elementary education. She taught fourth grade for over 25 years in the Lewiston-Porter Central School System. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and teacher.  Hilda and her husband Dick enjoyed traveling around the world. She was also an avid reader and a crackerjack, but friendly, bridge player. In 2005, she moved from Lewiston, NY, to Alabama to be closer to her family.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Francis Dick Brooks Schoonover; son, Richard Bryant Schoonover; and parents, Ernest and Rose Wieland.  She is survived by her daughter, Diane and husband, Gerald Elton Clarke, of Florence, AL; grandchildren, James Richard Clarke and wife, Tracey, of Germantown, Stephen Andrew Clarke and wife, Rachel, of Bellaire, TX, and Kathryn Ann Clarke of Houston, TX; great-grandchildren, Sydney Alyse and David Brooks Clarke of Germantown, TN, Ashley Ellen, Allison Elizabeth, and Lauren Nicole Clarke of Bellaire, TX. Honorary pallbearers are life-long friends, George Decker, Muriel Donovan, and Audrey McCaskill from Lewiston, NY; as well as her friends and companions at Park Place in Sheffield, AL and Merrill Gardens in Florence, AL.
The family wishes to thank Dr. John Bartmess and the staff of ECM Hospital in Florence, AL; Dr. Terrance Hart, Muscle Shoals, AL; Dr. Herman Douglas, Buffalo, NY; the staff of both Park Place and Merrill Gardens; Eldercare services and especially her caregiver and friend, Lillian Goodlow.
