Thomas "Tommy" W. Francis, 65, of Niagara Falls, NY, passed away on Sunday, November 25, 2012, surrounded by his family, at Niagara Hospice House in Lockport, NY. Born in Niagara Falls, NY, he was the son of the late John J. and Wilma E. (Hiller) Francis and step-son of Richard Lacey of Niagara Falls, NY.
Tommy attended local schools and graduated from Niagara Falls High School in 1966. He joined the Niagara Falls Police Department in 1969 and started as a foot patrol officer, and then worked the city's East Side in a unit patrol car. Tommy later served in the detective bureau, task force and confidential units of the department, and retired after 13 years of service. He later obtained his associate's degree in electronics from Bryant and Stratton. On May 8, 1971, he married Sylvia D. (Piatt) Francis in St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Niagara Falls, NY. Tommy enjoyed participating in bible study groups and reading Christian inspirational books. He also had a fascination with older clocks and watches, and enjoyed working with electronics and computers, and was proud to have built three television sets. He also enjoyed reading, art and music of the 1960s and 1970s, and closely following current events.
In addition to his wife of 42 years, he is survived by children, George M. Piatt of Niagara Falls, NY and John Thomas Francis, Sr. of North Tonawanda, NY; four grandchildren, John Thomas Francis, Jr. of Texas and Alexandria, Anastasia and Christopher Francis, all of Niagara Falls, NY; a brother, Roger (Janie) Francis of Maryland, a sister, Donna (Robert) South of Texas; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and his beloved, Bonnie. Tommy was the brother-in-law of Melvin (Lavonne) Piatt of Ohio; Judy (Richard) Porroni of Lockport, NY; Charlene McDonald of Lewiston, NY and the late Marketta (Ronald of Youngstown, NY) Anderson.
Visitation will be Friday, November 30th from 2-7 PM at M.J. COLUCCI & SON NIAGARA FUNERAL CHAPEL, 2730 Military Rd., Niagara Falls, NY, where funeral services will immediately follow the visitation at 7:00 PM, with Deacon Patrick Bradley, officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials offerings may be directed to the family.
