John L. Mayer

NIAGARA FALLS —

John L. Mayer, age 81, of Niagara Falls, entered into rest on Tuesday, March 19, 2013, under the care of his family and Niagara Hospice, after a courageous battle with cancer. John was born on May 24, 1931 in Dunkirk, NY, the son of late Hattie and Thaddeus Majerowski. After receiving his Masters Degree in Education from SUNY Fredonia in 1953, he married his wife Blanche, and moved to Niagara Falls to pursue his career in Education.
John was an educator at all levels of elementary school, junior and senior high school classes, and spent time as a school administrator and principal. He taught at virtually all public schools in the Niagara Falls School system at one time or another during his career. His educational endeavors also included many Adult Educational assignments, including time at the Community Vocational Rehabilitation Center towards the end of his career. He held active, part time teaching assignments until the amazing age of 79.
John was a truly outstanding man who was constantly recognized by former students in the Niagara Falls community while out doing his daily routine. He was a dedicated and loving husband and father who always put his family before himself, holding two jobs for most of his career. He worked through the summers teaching summer school, even holding a summer job back in the 1960s as a "Mr. Frosty" truck driver. He served on the Niagara Falls Board of Appeals and was an active member of the Prince of Peace Church and their ushers club for the past 40 years, attending weekly mass up until his diagnosis with pancreatic cancer in late 2012. John enjoyed gardening, shopping, working around the yard and staying active.
John is survived by his wife, Blanche (Szukala) of Niagara Falls; his two sons, Joseph R. Mayer, wife, Cyndy (Elek) and daughter, Whitney of Butler PA; and Thomas E. Mayer, wife, Michelle (Mills) and son, William of Grand Island NY.  John was predeceased by his brother, Norbert; his sister, Martha; and parents, all of Dunkirk, NY.
Friends and family can visit at the Lane Funeral Home, 8622 Buffalo Avenue, Niagara Falls NY, on Friday, March 22nd from 4-8 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Prince of Peace Church, 1055 North Military Road, Niagara Falls on Saturday, March 23, 2013 at 10:00 AM. John will be laid to rest at the Gate of Heaven Mausoleum, 500 Riverdale Ave., Lewiston, NY.
