NIAGARA FALLS —
James V. Conny, 91, of Niagara Falls, NY, passed away on Thursday, February 21, 2013 in Schoellkopf Health Care Facility in Niagara Falls, NY, following a brief illness. Born on March 9, 1921 in Niagara Falls, NY, he was the son of the late Joseph and Genevieve (Cornacchione) Conny.
Mr. Conny was a lifelong resident of Niagara Falls, NY. Jim, as he was known by family and friends, attended local schools and graduated from the former Trott Vocational High School in 1939. He later furthered his studies at St. Catharines Collegiate Institute and Vocational School to become an electrician. Mr. Conny proudly served in the United States Army Air Force, during World War II, where he was honorably discharged. On April 30, 1949, Jim married the former Antonette "Ann" Bongiovanni in the former St. Joseph Church (currently Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph Parish). He worked as a millwright for the Kimberly-Clark Corporation. Later, Mr. Conny was employed as an electrician for Carborundum, until his retirement in 1984.
Jim was a devout member of the former Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, where he served as an usher. He was very skilled in all aspects of the technical trades. With his skills, Mr. Conny designed and built his family's home in Niagara Falls, NY. Jim was also a talented wood carver, HAM radio operator and civil defense volunteer with the American Red Cross. One of the aspects of his life Mr. Conny was most proud of was for twenty-six years, Jim served as a volunteer for Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center, where he was awarded, twice, the "Volunteer of the Year" award.
In addition to his beloved wife of sixty-four years, Mr. Conny is survived by two children, Joanne (late Charles) James of Newfield, NY and Joseph (Beth) Conny of Frederick, MD; four grandchildren, Rebecca Ann James of Brooklyn, NY, Michael (Caroline Lees) James of Dryden, NY, Julia Mende Conny of Towson, MD and Jenna Mende Conny of Frederick, MD; and one great-granddaughter, Ava James. Jim is also survived by one sister, Mena Wakefield of Niagara Falls, NY; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by one sister, Antonette Dantuono; and one brother, Daniel Conny.
There will be no prior visitation. A private funeral service and entombment will be held in Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Lewiston, NY. If desired, memorial offerings in Jim's name may be made to Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center, 621-10th Street, Niagara Falls, NY 14301.
