LEWISTON —
Mary J. (Dengate) Burbee, age 94, formerly of Niagara Falls and Clare Bridge of Niagara (Alterra) Assisted Living facility, died Tuesday, January 31, 2012 in Our Lady of Peace Nursing facility. Mary was born December 23, 1917 in Lititz, PA, the daughter of the late Francis and Mary (McMahon) Dengate. She graduated from Sacred Heart Academy High School in Lititz, PA and from Saint Mary's College in South Bend, IN. Shortly after college she worked for the Army in Washington, D.C. until 1947, when she moved to Niagara Falls to join her family.
She married John D. Burbee in 1953. Mary worked as a Legal Secretary for the former Cohen, Swados and Brett Law Firm, retiring in the late 1970s. Mary was a very active member of St. John de LaSalle R.C. Church. In retirement, Mary did volunteer work for numerous charities including Martha's group, Altar and Rosary Society, and Meals On Wheels. She also loved to travel.
In addition to her parents, Mary was predeceased by her husband on February 2, 2009; and her brothers, Francis Dengate and William Dengate. She is survived by a sister, Margaret "Peg" (Camille) Fournier and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Mr. Jay Brett, Mr. William Hunt and Mr. Thomas Denn for their support. The family would also like to thank the staff at Alterra and Our Lady of Peace for care and support in Mary's later years.
Friends may call Thursday, February 9, 2012 from 4-9 PM at the LANE FUNERAL HOME, INC., 8622 Buffalo Avenue, Niagara Falls, NY. Prayers will be recited Friday 10:30 AM, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 AM in St. John de LaSalle R.C. Church. Interment will follow in Gate of Heaven R.C. Cemetery, Town of Lewiston. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you consider memorials in Mary's name to St. John de LaSalle R.C. Church, Niagara Falls, NY.
