Jackie A. Shumate

LEWISTON — Jackie "Jack" A. Shumate, Sr., of Ransomville, died on his 66th birthday, Sunday December 2, 2012 in Mount St. Mary's Hospital in Lewiston, after a lengthy illness.

Jack was born December 2, 1946 in Ivanhoe, VA, the son of the late Robert H. and Eula (Spears) Shumate and lived most of his life in Niagara Falls, until moving to Ransomville two years ago. Jack married Joann M. Ciurczak on October 5, 1968, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, in Niagara Falls, NY. He was employed by the NFTA at the Niagara Falls Airport for 31 years, retiring as a Ground Foreman in 1998.

Jack enjoyed going to the casino and watching sports, especially the Buffalo Bills, Buffalo Sabres and the NY Yankees. He also enjoyed his favorite pets, Josie and Sassy. The greatest joy of his life was his family and grandsons. Jack loved watching them play hockey. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his wife, Joann; his sons, Jack A. Shumate, Jr. (Melissa Marshall) of Ransomville; Matthew (Kristin) Shumate of the Town of Niagara; and Joseph (Darlene) Shumate of the Town of Wheatfield; his grandsons, Matthew II, Mitchell, Mason and Joseph Jr. Shumate; his step-grandchildren, D.J. Marshall, Gracie, Cabel and David Stewart; two brothers, Robert (Maxine) Shumate of Ransomville and Frank (Carol) Shumate of the Town of Wheatfield; a brother-in- law, Walter Ciurczak; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by two sisters, Margaret (the late William) Truesdale and Wilma (late Donald) McMicking; a twin brother, Jimmy O. (late Linda) Shumate; his father and mother-in-law, Matthew and Josephine Ciurczak; and a brother-in-law, David Ciurczak.

Friends may call at HARDISON FUNERAL HOME, 3648 Ransomville Road, Ransomville, on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 6, at 10:00 AM in the funeral home. Burial will follow in North Ridge Cemetery, Church Rd., Town of Cambria. In lieu of flowers, donations to assist the family would be appreciated.
