Robert J. Winter

Robert J. Winter of Amherst, NY, December 9, 2008. He was born on November 18,1941 to Eugene A. Winter and Roberta Hayward. He was the great-grandson of Dr. Henderson Hayward of Los Angeles, CA.

Dr. Hayward was a pioneer in the early development of Los Angeles and a founder of the Security Bank, which became a part of the Bank of America. He was the great-great grandson of Dr. Joseph Johnson Hayward, who studied medicine under Dr. Benjamin Rush, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Bob served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Verdun, France. He continued his education after the Army on the GI Bill. He completed undergraduate and graduate studies in business at the State University of New York at Buffalo. An avid sportsman, Bob enjoyed deep-sea fishing off the New Jersey shore in the summer, and Key Largo, FL during the winter. A talented horseman, he was a member of the Vicmead (Delaware) Hunt Club. A seasoned sailor, he was a member of the New Castle (Delaware) Sailing Club, located on the Delaware River, where he tackled high tides and ocean traffic. He spent his entire career in banking. He was an officer of the Liberty Bank  and spent the last 25 years with the Marine Midland/HSBC Bank in commercial lending. In the early 1980's, he relocated to Wilmington, Delaware, where he was a vice president of Marine Midland’s national real estate lending operation. He retired in 2003. He was a past member of the University Club and the Montefiore Club.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his brothers Ronald H. Winter and James D. (Marianne) Winter. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Friends may call at the Harry A. Wedekindt Funeral Home, 280 Grover Cleveland Hwy. at No. Bailey Thursday and Friday 6-8 PM where funeral services will be held Saturday followed by a Mass of Christian Burial  at St. Benedict Church, 1317 Eggert Rd. (at Main St.) Saturday at 10:00 AM. Friends and family are invited to attend. Arrangements by John E. Roberts Funeral Home.
