HIGGS: Foley's Tavern in the spotlight

Niagara Gazette — The Niagara Beautification Commission Spotlight Award Committee presented its November award to Foley’s Tavern at 8752 Buffalo Ave. recently. This was formerly the Old Heidelberg, German in nature I guess and now it has been re invented as an Irish pub.

Roger Foley, the proprietor, stated he opened in 1997 and operates this LaSalle location as a friendly, neighborhood tavern. He does not serve food on a regular basis but during special occasions like Superbowl Sunday and of course St. Patrick’s Day he serves catered food appropriate for the event. I noticed some Halloween items that were being removed from a party held recently. There is live music on the weekends, a pool table and a small private area for meetings, etc.

I introduced myself to a customer, Ashton, who told me he became a regular after attending a benefit back in April. It doesn’t hurt that he is also of Irish descent and he feels right at home here. Plans are in the works for a celebration on Dec. 28 and Ashton is on the committee and looking into highlighting Irish music. He called is a “safe, friendly place to hang out and has met good friends and enjoys the good prices also.”

The outdoor, patio area in the rear caught my attention and that of the Spotlight committee as it looked like a “cool” place to be during the summer months. Unfortunately, it was more than “cool” on our visit during November but it still held the friendly atmosphere though no longer in use for the weekend music and bar service. Picnic tables and a stand up bar with appropriate décor made it the place to do our award presentation.

The place reminded me of a spot that “Archie Bunker” might have called his regular hangout.

On another note, the Niagara Arts and Cultural Center is holding its annual Holiday Extravaganza Open House event this weekend from 3 to 8 p.m. on Saturday.

Open Artist Studios and an Artist Market will be available until 6 p.m. when the gallery reception begins. NACC Artists and Friends are featured in this exhibit and there is also a show exhibiting works of William Carpenter in the garden gallery.

Complementary appetizers provided by Wine on Third and wine from Supermarket Liquors will be available during the reception. During the evening, performances by The Rainbow Singers, the Niagara Experience Players, Jaclyn Carol’s Dance Academy, live music in the Grand Theater and other entertainment will be featured during the evening.

So, there you have it. The NACC has put together a great evening for your enjoyment and the price is right. Who says there is nothing to do in Niagara Falls?

Now all that remain is a charred hulk of brick and mortar that is fit for nothing more than the wrecker's ball. DELUCA: Poetry, in motion
Bob Baxter sent me his new book of poems the other day and I promised to read them. But, when I tried to open the book, I couldn't. I've always been prejudiced against poetry.

He knew of my dislike, but as a retired creative writing professor, had hoped the poems from “Niagara Lost and Found” might soften me toward one of his favorite art forms.

Sadly, my disdain was set in place long ago, in reaction to teachers who could not help me understand.
