Found as a stray. She came in very dirty and matted. Her collar was being held together with duct tape that had become stuck to her fur. A lot of her fur under her neck came off when removing the tape. She was happy-go-lucky while being groomed and enjoyed the attention. Shortly after arriving she began showing symptoms of the deadly parvo virus. She was successfully treated, for it was caught in its very early stages. Daisy was very patient during her extensive treatment. After gaining her strength she was ready for adoption. She was adopted and then returned almost 2 months later. The first several weeks she did very well with the new family as they worked with her on basic training which included learning to sit, shake hands, housebreaking, etc. She is 90% housebroken, hardly has any accidents. She is very playful and puppy-like. After several weeks some problems arose. She began “play biting” and jumping up at faces. The family began to focus on these issues during training. As time went on, the behavior grew worse. As the dog became more comfortable in the home she began to see herself as higher in the “pack” than 5 year old child and began to knock him down. When she was corrected she would become defiant and often growl and show her teeth. Her mouthing was now becoming scary and it hurt!! She then began to work her way up in the pack “hierarchy” and saw herself as above the young boy and the wife. Slowly moving up, this now included the teenage boy. When she started to challenge the man of the house, who up until that time she had respected as the Alpha leader, her new family tearfully decided this dog could not remain with them. It was too much of a risk for the young child and she was not responding to their training efforts. Heartbroken, they returned her to the SPCA. She has good days and can be very sweet, but when she does not get her way she often resorts to showing her teeth and growling and snapping. Daisy is now 58 pounds, 4/24/09. She is very active. She will need a home with no cats, as she is too rough with them. She will need a home with no small children for she has a long road ahead of her to overcome her aggressive and dominate nature. She does not seem to mind female dogs that are older, but has growled and shown her teeth to younger male dogs. If you have a dog at home, you will be required to bring your dog to meet her before doing an adoption. The new family must fully understand the nature of her behavior and how serious it can be. The new family will be given literature regarding these “Alpha” issues but must also be willing to take her to professional training classes. We will be accepting applications and will choose the home we feel is best suited for this particular dogs issues. All members of the new family will have to be “on board”, be aware of her problems and be willing to work together and consistently to teach her to be a family member, not the leader of the family that she wants to be!!!

PET OF THE WEEK: #2057: Mariel Mariel is a Short Hair, Spayed Female, 3 Years. She came from a condemned home with her sister. They are both "bobtail" kitties. Laid back and mellow, they are looking for a quiet home. Mariel has the most beautiful and large green eyes. She is a petite and very sweet!

PET OF THE WEEK: #41112: Foxhound, Blue He was picked up running loose with another dog. His owner came and took the other dog home and said he would return in a few days for Blue. Blue waited and waited and his owner never returned.

PET OF THE WEEK: #40719: Furr-nando Found as a stray. He is an overweight boy (he weighs 18 pounds). We have started him on diet cat food and his new family is encouraged to do the same, for extra weight can bring on many types of health problems. Could use some exercise (possibly a laser pointer could encourage him to play). Very mellow, vocal and social boy who enjoys attention.

PET OF THE WEEK: #1554 Doodles Found as a stray. She is very friendly and affectionate. Bouncy and happy girl. She will need some training. The volunteers say she is very eager and willing to learn. The volunteers have found that Doodles does not like other dogs. Will need to be an only dog. The staff has noticed that Doodles seems to be ok with some dogs and not others. If you are interested in Doodles and have another dog, bring your dog to meet her. The volunteers say she is a nice, active and playful puppy. Likes to play ball and is good on leash. She takes food gently.

PET OF THE WEEK: #39345 Mercedes Found as a stray. She is an affectionate girl who is a little shy and nervous right now. She needs some sweet talk to know she can trust you. She warms up to you quickly. She has a sleek and super soft coat. She will need a family who understands she is bashful and who has the time and patience to socialize her and show her the world is not as scary as she seems to think.

PET OF THE WEEK: #39951, Eggroll Surrendered due to owner had to move and could not take him along. He is shy and hides around children, for he used to get chased by his previous owner's brothers. Reported to be used to dogs and a guinea pig. Has never been outside, indoor cat only!!

PET OF THE WEEK: #1093, Cowboy Found as a stray. He may appear intimidating but looks are deceiving. He is a very good natured boy!! Large, strong and active, he will need plenty of exercise. Can sit when asked. Had a severe flea infestation when he arrived and due to this he had some scabs and missing fur from scratching. He seems to have had an allergic reaction to the fleas so it is important his new family keep him on a flea preventative to avoid future itchy reactions. His ears will need occasional cleaning. He was very good while his ears were cleaned. He weighs 67 pounds, 4/21/09. We strongly recommend if you have another dog to bring your dog to meet this dog before doing an adoption. 4/22/09: The volunteers have found that he walks very well on leash. He likes to play ball. He has a very gentle and sweet personality. Very trainable with lots of love to give. Very good dog!!
