Deputy injured responding to fire

Niagara County Sheriffs Deputy Ray Needle suffered a broken leg while responding to a fire on Sunset Island at 2:13 a.m. Friday, according to reports.

Needle reportedly slipped on wooden stairs, fell and broke his left leg at the site of a fire at the residence of Robert and Barbara Dobosz. The owners of the house doused the fire with water, extinguished the flames and removed a charred couch from the home, according to reports. The homeowners suffered minor burns to their hands and arms and were treated for injuries at the scene.

Needle was taken to Eastern Niagara Hospital-Newfane for treatment.

Wilson Fire Company officials said the fire broke out when flames from a fireplace stove ignited the couch. There was smoke and fire damage throughout the home, according to reports.

Niagara Falls

• BURGLARY: Police are investigating a burglary in the 400 block of Fifth Street. A 87-year-old woman told officers that prior to 11 a.m. Friday, someone broke into a home she owns by breaking a basement window. The victim said a quantity of copper pipe was taken.

City of Lockport

• DWI: Louanne M. Cyrus, 28, 3983 Lower Mountain Road, Apt. 1001, Cambria, was charged with driving while intoxicated, an equipment violation and failure to keep right. At 2:12 a.m. Friday on Lincoln Avenue the patrol observed Cyrus driving with no headlights on while failing to keep right, according to the report. The patrol detected a strong odor of alcoholic beverage. Cyrus failed sobriety tests.
