For the period of Nov. 12 to 25, the Niagara Falls Fire Department responded to 233 calls. The total number of service calls for 2012 to date is 5,705.
• ACCIDENT: On Nov. 12, Engine 9 responded to a motor vehicle accident, with injuries, at 11:49 a.m. in the 1500 block of Military Road. Firefighters stabilized two patients who were then taken to Mount St. Mary’s Hospital for treatment.
• FIRE: On Nov. 17, a vacant house in the 1000 block of Niagara Avenue was the scene, at 7:27 p.m., of a working structure fire. A full assignment from Platoon 4 was sent and spent over two hours battling the blaze. The structure had been the scene of previous fires. Firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading to an adjacent house a few feet away. Accidental causes for the fire have been ruled out, as all utilities to the building were shut off, and the cause remains under investigation. Damage was listed at $10,000.
• FIRE: On Nov. 18, Platoon 4 was dispatched to a report of a kitchen fire, at 12:43 a.m., in the 500 block of Seventh Street. The fire was confined to the area near the stove and damage was estimated at $1,500. Smoke detector and Carbon Dioxide detector violation notices were issued to the occupant.
• FIRE: On Nov. 19, an electrical fire, at 3:21 a.m., in a house in the 500 block of 15th Street required units from Platoon 4 to be called out. Firefighters were able to rapidly de-energize the problem and keep damage to a minimum. However, because the electrical system was not working, the house was condemned. The Red Cross assisted the residents of the home with temporary living arrangements.
• FALSE ALARM: On Nov. 21, a 15-year-old boy pulled a fire alarm box, at 11:03 a.m., at Niagara Falls High School. There was no fire. School security cameras identified the suspect, who was arrested and charged with a felony.
• FIRE: On Nov. 21, Platoon 1 responded, at 5:34 p.m., to a call of a building fire in the 500 block of Third Street. An electrical short was the cause of the fire. Damage was set at $1,000.
• ACCIDENT: On Nov. 21, Engine 9’s crew, consisting of Captain Gary Chambers and Firefighters Eric Barlow and Scott Furman, were sent, at 6:29 p.m., to the 9100 block of Niagara Falls Boulevard for a man struck by a hit-and-run driver. The crew provided first aid measures for the victim’s serious injuries and he was transported to the Erie County Medical Center.
• FIRE: On Nov. 25, a candle that was accidentally tipped over caused a structure fire at 11:13 p.m. in the 400 block of Tenth Street. Platoon 4 was sent and knocked down the fire that had spread to a tablecloth and curtains. Damage was pegged at $15,000.
