BASKETBALL: Flynn signs rookie contract with T-Wolves

Staff Report

The Minnesota Timberwolves announced Friday they’ve signed Niagara Falls native Jonny Flynn to a contract worth at least $8 million over the next three years.

Specific terms of the deal were not disclosed, but NBA rookie salaries are dictated by draft position. As the No. 6 overall pick, Flynn is guaranteed $2.47 million this season, $2.66 million next season, and $2.85 million in his third year. Teams can give players up to an extra 20 percent on top of slotted salaries.

The Timberwolves also have the option of retaining Flynn for a fourth season, at a 26.8 percent raise from his third season, and can extend a qualifying offer in the summer of 2013 that would make Flynn a restricted free agent.

The status of No. 5 pick Ricky Rubio is still uncertain, as he assesses his contract with his Spanish team.

Minnesota also announced the signing of Wayne Ellington. As the No. 28 overall selection, Ellington is guaranteed about $2.7 million over the next three seasons.

Flynn is currently in Las Vegas, along with his former Niagara Falls High School and Syracuse University teammate Paul Harris, preparing to make his professional debut Sunday in the NBA Summer League. Harris is also on the Timberwolves’ summer roster.
