HS FOOTBALL: Wilson finds room for Atlas

WILSON — Recently reinstated Wilson teacher Bill Atlas may be back on the sidelines as a coach this fall after all.

At a school board meeting 10 days ago, president Timothy Kropp said it would take a resignation for that to happen as all coaching slots already had been filled.

The Niagara Gazette has learned that assistant varsity football coach Nick Benedetti recently resigned his position, creating an opening on the Lakemen staff.

When reached Thursday, athletics director Charlie Jufer said he could not comment on specific personel. He did note, however, that more would be known after Tuesday’s work session with the board.

Atlas and T.J. Baia, former JV and varsity baseball coaches at Wilson, were charged last April with endangering the welfare of a child following an alleged hazing incident on a bus ride home from a game in Niagara Falls.

At the time, Atlas was also the head varsity football coach and Baia was the head varsity boys soccer coach.

Both coaches were put on leave from their teaching and coaching duties until charges were dropped in the case earlier this month. Atlas and Baia were then reinstated to their teaching positions 10 days ago.

In the spring, the school board approved Al Scarpine as the new head varsity football coach. Chris Alex was re-appointed to the head varsity boys soccer position.

Both would have to resign their posts in order for Atlas and Baia to return to their respective sports in the same capacity as before this events of the past 18 months.

Will you be out voting in this Tuesday’s primary election?

Yes. I believe the primary election is just as important as the regular election.
No. My vote doesn’t really count.
Not making a special trip. There aren’t any races I’m real interested in voting in.
I’m making a special trip. I don’t usually bother with the primary but I want to have my say on these state races.
