Flynn wins first game in Australia

Niagara Gazette — Niagara Falls native Jonny Flynn had 12 points, eight rebounds and seven assists in 26 minutes Friday to lead the Melbourne Tigers toa runaway 96-66 win over the Adelaide 36ers in Flynn’s first game in the Australian National Basketbal League.

“He’s just stepped off a plane, shaken off the jet lag, shaken off the rust on his game, he hasn’t played a full game in five or six months and I thought he was outstanding,” Tigers coach Chris Antsey said, according to the Herald Sun newspaper.

The Tigers were 1-4 prior to acquiring Flynn, who has been hailed as the highest-credentialed import in league history.

“We played a great team and beat them handsomely,” Flynn told the local paper. “If I can help out a little bit, it’s going to be a scary sight.”

Flynn reportedly turned down more lucractive offers to play in China because of the chance to play more minutes in Australia.

“I’m glad I decided to come here,” Flynn said. “I’m looking forward to the future.”

The Tigers have 10 days off before their next game.
