Niagara drops opener in Oregon

Niagara Gazette — The Niagara men's basketball team tipped off the season Friday night with a 102-83 loss at Oregon State.

Marvin Jordan led the Purple Eagles with 17 points, hitting 5 of 9 from 3-point range. Juan'ya Green had 14 points, nine assists and four steals. Ameen Tanksley (12 points), Antoine Mason (10 points) and freshman T.J. Cline (11 points) were also in double figures. Freshman guard Tahjere McCall had eight points and a team-high eight rebounds off the bench. No other Niagara player had more than four rebounds.

The Beavers shot 52 percent and out-rebounded Niagara 52-37.

"We were overmatched tonight," Niagara coach Joe Mihalich said in a statement emailed to local media. "We played a Pac-12 team that won 21 games and returned 4 starters. I was somewhat please with our offense, but disappointed with our defense. We have a lot of work to do on both end of the floor but especially on the defensive end.”

The game was part of the 2K Sports Classic, which will bring Bucknell and New Mexico State to the Gallagher Center next weekend. Niagara plays its home opener Tuesday night against St. Francis.
