Wilson's Geltz promoted to Double A

NIAGARA FALLS — Wilson native Steve Geltz continued his climb in the Los Angeles Angels farm system last week when he was promoted to the team’s Double A affiliate in Arkansas.

Geltz, a righthanded relief pitcher who spent three seasons as the University at Buffalo’s closer, struggled in his July 23 Double A debut, but came back two nights later to pitch a scoreless 10th inning and earn a win.

In his time with the Rancho Cucamonga (Calif.) Quakes, Geltz struck out 51 batters in 34 innings, compiling a 3-1 record with a 3.44 earned run average.

Geltz, who signed with the Angels in 2008, is the second former UB player to be promoted this month, following Mike Folli’s call-up to the Memphis Redbirds, Triple A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals.

In addition, ex-Bulls Zach Anderson, Chaz Mye and Brad Augstin are playing minor league ball. All three are Western New Yorkers.

Mye, a North Tonawanda native who played for the inaugural Niagara Power team, is 1-1 with a 3.09 ERA for the Oakland Athletics’ team in the Rookie Arizona League.

Anderson, a Williamsville East graduate, has a 3.86 ERA in 14 appearances for the Auburn Doubledays, Single A affiliate of  the Toronto Blue Jays .

Augustin, who also graduated from Williamsville East, is batting .289 for the Normal (Ill.) CornBelters in the Frontier League.
