HS BOWLING: NFHS takes seventh at states

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. — The Niagara Falls boys bowling team picked a bad time to have a bad day.

The Wolverines struggled to both string shots together and adjust to lane conditions, finishing seventh out of 10 teams at the New York State Championships at Mardi Bob Lanes. They finished with a six-game total of 5,800 pins.

“It was a rough day,” Falls coach Ed Ventry said. “We could never get anything going.”

NFHS fell behind early and slipped even further back after the first game of the afternoon session. At that point, Ventry began to substitute, giving each of his eight keglers an opportunity to participate in the event. Mike Alex led the Wolverines with a 1,237, followed by Timmy Drylewski’s 1,196.

“We wanted to do better obviously, but we’re still very pleased with what we accomplished as a team,” Ventry said. “Our boys exceeded the expectations of many. We are very proud of them.”

North Rockland of Section I won the boys competition.

The boys and girls all-stars from Section VI will compete individually today. Local competitors include the Lockport tandem of Sam Stachura-Lee and Bridget Masiello and North Tonawanda’s Brianna Larson.
