BASKETBALL: Flynn leads T-Wolves to first summer win
Jonny Flynn can be a scoring guard if that’s what the Minnesota Timberwolves want.
After making more assists than field goals in his first two NBA Summer League games this week, Flynn scored 21 points Friday to lead the Timberwolves over the Washington Wizards 89-82 in Las Vegas.
The Niagara Falls native was efficient in the process, shooting 7 for 11 from the floor, and 7 for 7 from the free throw line.
Flynn, who got into the lane whenever he pleased in his first summer game following three days of practice, also dished out five assists, but it was the shots he created for himself that had the NBA.com commentators comparing him to former All-Star Rod Strickland.
Flynn came off the bench to score 16 points on just six field goal attempts in the first half.
With the Timberwolves hoping to bring their other top draft pick, Ricky Rubio, over from Spain, General Manager David Kahn has suggested that Flynn could be used as a shooting guard in his rookie season, while Rubio runs point.
Flynn’s former Niagara Falls High School and Syracuse teammate Paul Harris saw just four minutes of action, and his only statistical contribution was a personal foul.
The Timberwolves face the New Orleans Hornets at 6:30 p.m. today.
