NIAGARA FALLS —
While Niagara Falls seniors will be dancing the night away, Jazlyn Porter will be thinking about the long jump.
Not only will the junior pull double duty at the Section VI track and field championships in Jamestown this weekend, but Porter will attend the school’s prom in downtown Niagara Falls.
Porter is qualified for the 400 meter dash and has the section’s top distance in the long jump. Toss in a dress and dancing at the Conference Center at Niagara Falls tonight and you have quite the busy weekend for your average high school junior.
“I know the 400 is early but long jump is kind of at the bottom so I’m hoping to get out of there at 4:30 or so hopefully,” Porter said. “I don’t know, I’m just going to try and get home soon.”
Porter will make the almost two-hour drive along with the Wolverines’ 400 meter relay team and pentathlon runner Taylor Sanders, but the junior has the most events on her plate this weekend.
“Hopefully we get the performance we want out of the but it’s going to be tough,” Falls track coach Jon Robins sad. “There’s just so much going on, getting your dress and all that. Especially with the girls, with the boys it’s a lot easier.”
Robins said Porter is used to the workload.
“She runs the 400 then does the triple jump. She’s a double-winner but when they give out MVPs for the field and MVPs for the track she’s not a double-winner,” Falls track coach Jon Robins said. “It’s been tough on her but she’s done a great job.”
Porter’s 17-feet-1 1/2 inch long jump puts her well ahead of Frontier’s McKyla Brooks (16-9 3/4) on the Section VI qualifier list, and a 400 time of 58.50 puts her third in the section behind Kala Allen (57.12) of Williamsville East and Amherst’s Ashley Fields (57.42).
“She’s facing two of the best 400 runners in the state in our section and she’s right there with them,” Robins said. “We’re hoping she can sneak in there, save her best in the final of the 400 and get a spot.”
Porter was the first Wolverines female to make the state indoor meet this winter, and Robins said he’s proud of her accomplishments on and off the track.
“She’s just a really good person and that’s what I’m most proud of,” he said. “As far as athletes go, that’s what I want. Good people.”
With hair appointments set up and post-prom plans made at the high school, Porter is hoping she can sneak out of the after-prom festivities early to get a few more hours of sleep before the long drive back to Jamestown for day two.
“I can go, but coach Robins has to tell them we get to leave early,” Porter said. “I’ll probably only stay for an hour or two.”
She said her date will have to understand.
“I want to have fun,” Porter said, “but I need my rest too.”
