Falcons fly past Falls in Fed playoffs

A Niagara Falls and Niagara-Wheatfield player got their helmets stuck together five seconds into the second period. It was the only stalemate of the night.

Second-seeded Niagara-Wheatfield flew past No. 7 Niagara Falls in a 12-0 rout in the Federation quarterfinals at the Northtown Center on Friday night.

Cory Becker had a natural hat trick just 7:46 into the first period and the Falcons soared after that, easily taking care of the rival Wolverines in front of more than 200 spectators.

“It was good to get on board and get rolling,” N-W coach Rick Wrazin said. “We have a lot of younger kids, guys coming in nervous. It’s good to get a jump. We did everything right. We finished, we worked hard. We really played well.”

The Falcons, who beat Niagara Falls 9-2 in a New Year’s Eve matinee during the regular season, had little trouble getting out in front and piling on in each period.

“They’re a good team and they came out of the gate fast,” Niagara Falls coach Stan Wojton said. “We tried to do our best to compete with them, but they’re a great team and there’s only so much we can do.”

The Falcons scored in all phases of the game. Mike Parisi (two goals, one assist) netted a power play tally on a slick cross-crease feed from Keith Haseley early in the second period, while Dillon Hayes scored a shorthanded goal on the rush to make it 6-0 later in the frame.

“It was good to see in a game like that that everybody kept playing the system,” Wrazin said. “They kept playing the team game. We have a very unselfish team and it’s nice to see them play it that way.”

Junior forwards Nick Matos and Ryan Logar each added a pair of goals, while Haseley and Matt Paonessa each added goals for the No. 10 ranked team in the state, according to the New York State Sportswriters Association.

“I wish them nothing but the best and I think they can make a big run,” Wojton said.

Niagara-Wheatfield will play No. 3 Frontier at 8:30 p.m. Monday at Northtown Center. The Falcons beat Frontier’s Falcons 2-1 during the regular season.

“They’re a good hockey team,” Wrazin said. “It’s going to be a working man’s game for sure.”
