Niagara Falls resident Jerry Mangan was named men’s and women’s cross country coach at Division III Hilbert College Thursday. The former Niagara County Community College coach has been involved in the Western New York running community for more than 30 years.
“Jerry has tremendous energy and enthusiasm, which will translate well to our student-athletes,” Hilbert athletics director Richard Walsh said in a release. “His array of contacts in the local running community will be a tremendous asset in his recruiting endeavors.”
Mangan was a two-time all-Catholic track and field champion in the 800 meters at Niagara Catholic. At Buffalo State College, Mangan competed in cross country and track and field, helping the Bengals to the 1981 state indoor track and field championship.
He’s a member of the Checkers Running Club and competes in the USATF masters division. He averages approximately 20 road races per year.
“I’m very excited and anxious to begin working with Hilbert’s student-athletes,” Mangan said. “I’m ready for this opportunity to develop successful teams and coach athletes who love the sport as much as I do.”
