NFHS girls soccer team gets first win following delay, location change

Niagara Gazette — The Niagara Falls girls soccer team was forced to wait, but earned its first win of the season Monday night.

The Wolverines beat Niagara Catholic, 3-1, at Niagara University in a game that was pushed back three hours when John Spanbauer, director of recreation, intramural and club sports at NU, called Niagara Falls Athletic Director John Forcucci and invited the teams to play at the school.

"(Spanbauer) called me up and asked if we wanted to play there," Forcucci said. "I said, 'Why not.' "

Alexa Caputo opened the scoring early, putting a bouncing shot past Niagara Catholic goalie Danielle DeVole.

"It took a weird bounce and went right in," Niagara Falls coach Bill Schmidke said, "but a goal's a goal."

Caputo added her second of the night when she took a pass from Maddie Chille and fired it into the back of the net.

Niagara Catholic's Marina Campbell scored an unassisted goal to bring the score within one, but Chille added an unassisted goal of her own late to ice the game.

"It's a confidence builder," Schmidke said. "We've been close in a lot of games, and in this game we finally finished.

"We played more intense tonight. It was senior night, and I think (the seniors) wanted to be at their best on their night."

Malorie Garabedian made 10 saves to earn the win for the Wolverines (1-8-1). DeVole stopped 16 for the Patriots
