GIRLS BASKETBALL: Grand Island read for stiff challenge in regional

Last week’s goal was to shut down Xavier signee Shaquita Smith of Amherst. Mission accomplished.

This week?

Stop Niagara signee Shy Britton. And Jessica Sexton. And Ashley Armstrong.

“They’ve got a full stack, not just one good player,” Grand Island coach Jen Banker said of Section V Class A champion Greece Arcadia.

Th teams will play at 2 p.m. today in the Class A Far West Regional at Gates Chili High School. GI (16-6 overall) is ranked eighth in the state and seeking its first appearance in the state semifinals in school history. Arcadia (20-2 overall) is the fourth ranked team in the state.

“They’re a really good team … but it would stink to get this far and not get (to states),” sophomore point guard Kallie Banker said.

The Vikings will undoubtedly have their hands full, though. Britton, a 6-foot center that can also handle the ball, averages a team-best 17.9 points and 10.6 rebounds per game.

“We’ve played against Britton on the AAU circuit and she’s extremely athletic,” the elder Banker said. “She’s one of those players that can grab the rebound, bring it up the floor and finish at the basket.”

Britton is complemented by fellow senior Jessica Sexton. The 5-foot-11 forward is a double-double machine, averaging 13.3 points and 10.7 rebounds per game.

Point guard Ashley Armstrong is the catalyst of the Titans’ offense. The 5-foot-4 senior averages 11.3 points and 4.8 assists per game.

GI, meanwhile, is led by Kallie Banker. The reigning Niagara Gazette Player of the Year averages 16 points and five assists per game. Forwards Brooke DeMarco (junior) and Mary Scherrer (senior) have also blossomed into double-digit scorers in the postseason.

Freshman center Cassie Oursler, who stands 6-foot-2, will need to stay out of foul trouble to help the Vikings defensively and on the glass. Danielle Wegrzyn, a junior, must hit her open looks to keep the Titans honest, coach Banker said.

“It’s going to take a complete team effort,” she added. “All five players must play defense, box out and do their jobs.”

The lone common opponent between the two schools is Lockport. GI dropped a pair of tightly-contested Niagara Frontier League games to the Lady Lions, while the Titans handled LHS 66-40 in the opening round of their Tip-Off Tournament.

“Defense, boxing out and playing as a team are the keys again,” the younger Banker said. “Believing in ourselves is a big thing, too.”
