COLLEGE ROUNDUP (Nov. 19): Bulls shoot better in first win

Mitchell Watt had 13 points and six rebounds in 16 minutes, Calvin Betts had 12 points, eight rebounds and four steals, and Jawaan Alston had nine points and 10 rebounds as the Buffalo men’s basketball team beat Navy 63-53 on Thursday in Providence, R.I. for its first win of the season.

After shooting less than 31 percent from the field in their season opening loss, the Bulls improved to better than 43 percent in their second outing, getting a combined 14 of 27 (52 percent) performance from Watt, Betts and Alston.

The Bulls perimeter players again struggled. Last year’s leading scorer, Rodney Pierce had just six points on 2 of 7 shooting, and touted transfer Zach Filzen went 1 for 4 from the floor.

Defensively, the Bulls held Navy to less than 31 percent shooting and won the rebounding battle 42-32.

John Boyer scored seven of his 10 points from the foul line. The starting point guard also had five rebounds and two assists.

Max Boudreau contributed eight points and seven rebounds.

UB plays at Towson on Saturday, then comes home to face Canisius on Tuesday.

Megan Van Tatenhove scored 14 of her 18 points in the first half as the Bonnies (4-0) built an early 28-9 lead and never looked back.

“We were really tentative in the first half and we let the Bonnies dictate the tempo of the game,” Niagara coach Kendra Faustin said “In the second half we played even versus a very good team and there were times where we looked like the better team.”

Liz Flooks led Niagara with 15 points, and Jennifer Manama had 13.
