BUFFALO —
The Buffalo Sabres acquired the negotiating rights to former Vancouver defenseman Christian Ehrhoff from the New York Islanders on Wednesday.
The 28-year-old defenseman scored 14 goals and 50 points for the Canucks this season and cost Buffalo a 2012 fourth-round pick for the right to ink a contract.
Islanders general manager Garth Snow acquired the rights to Ehrhoff from Vancouver on Tuesday in exchange for a 2012 fourth-round pick. Snow failed to sign the defenseman before a self-imposed 5 p.m. deadline on Wednesday before shipping his rights to the Sabres.
Buffalo will have exclusive negotiating rights with Ehrhoff until noon on Friday, when free agency opens in the National Hockey League.
