HS ROUNDUP: West wrestlers top Grand Island

WRESTLING

Ken West 42, Grand Island 24

Jake Palmiero (125), Rob Williams (130), Sam Giordano (152) and Matt Agugliaro (171) each won by pinfall as Kenmore West (4-0) remained perfect in the Niagara Frontier League with a win over host Grand Island.

Joe Giambelluca (119) won by pin for the Vikings (0-4).

Lockport 60, Lew-Port 10

The Lions moved to 4-0 in the NFL as a result of eight forfeits and a pin from Andy Godfrey (189).

Joe McGreevy (140), Tom McGreevy (152) and Sean Roemer (171) each won their matches for the Lancers (0-4).

Niagara-Wheatfield 58, NT 6

Jake Gray and Zack Antone each scored their first-ever varsity wins as the Falcons rolled to their fourth win in as many NFL starts.

Gray pinned Ryan Houghton at 119 in just 1:57, while Antone decisioned Rich Yeager 10-5 at 171. Angelo Malvestuto added a pin for the Falcons while Wally Maziarz (103) and Fred Marillo (215) had the wins for NT.

Niagara Falls 37, Ken East 25

Nick Fiocco (119), Dan Mitravich (145) and Marco Mendez (160) each won by pinfall, while Irvin Buck won by technical fall at 125 pounds to lead Niagara Falls (4-0) past Kenmore East.

Pat Tuttle (130) earned the only pin for the Bulldogs (0-4).

Albion 50, Barker 33

Sam Elovaris (125), Matt Hilobuk (130), Joe Blair (145), Gary Pahura (152), Zach Beecher (171) and Mike Blank (189) were each winners by pinfall for Albion (3-1) in a Niagara-Orleans League victory.

Jacob Demler (119), Alex Alt (135), John Lapp (160), Brad Dingman (215) each won by pin for the Raiders (1-2).

Medina 45, Roy-Hart 25

Tristan Hamner (96), Evan Wells (103), Nick Joy (145), Richard Dawson (189), and Sam Montesanti (275) each registered pins as Medina (3-0) beat Roy-Hart in a key N-O battle.

Jeff Brigham (135) and Tyler Brent (152) won by pin for the Rams (1-2).

Cheektowaga 46, Starpoint 21

Hoang Pham (125), Scott Patryzk (135), Adam Piscitello (160) and Pat Eck (171) each won by pin as the Warriors (4-0) won an ECIC II match.

For the Spartans (2-2), Dylan Heinzeroth (103) and Mike Uglinica (112) won by pinfall, while Matt Allinson decisioned Clay Reeb, 15-8 at 140 pounds. Reeb was ranked second in Section VI at 140.

Depew 33, Tonawanda 32

Jake Cristina (171) and Andy Jokawik (189) each won by pinfall as the Wildcats edged Tonawanda in an ECIC III match.

Jim Schaff (130), Justin Moore (135), Tom Waterhouse (160) were winners by pin for the Warriors (2-3).



GIRLS BASKETBALL

O’Hara 42, Buff. Sem 21

Alyssa Laudero had 10 points and 10 boards to lift Cardinal O’Hara to its first Monsignor Martin Athletic Association win of the season. O’Hara outscored Buffalo Seminary, 12-2 in the opening quarter.

Morgan Ward added eight points and 16 rebounds, while Julia Cuthbertson had 20 boards and Shaniqua Ray had 10 for the Hawks (5-12 overall, 1-2 MMAA).

Julia Papiernik had 10 points to lead Buffalo Seminary.

Mt. St. Mary 38, N. Catholic 34

Katie Carroll had a game-high 13 points to lift Mount St. Mary past Niagara Catholic in a Monsignor Martin Athletic Association contest.

The game was tight throughout, until Mount St. Mary scored a pair of baskets in the final 30 seconds to pull out the win.

“It was real close and it was anybody’s game until the end,” Niagara Catholic coach Larry Puzan said. “They are a senior-laden team and that probably paid off in the end, but it was a hard fought game.”

Allison Fretthold added eight for the Mount (8-4 overall, 2-2 MMAA). Emily Bird made four 3-pointers and Jen Hare added 11 points for the Patriots (6-8, 2-4).
