LOCKPORT — Brandon Flanders doesn’t care that his dad won the 2007 Greater Niagara Newspapers Super Bowl Contest.
Just show him the pizza.
“This is great. I love pizza,” said the Lockport 11-year-old, a fifth-grader at Roy B. Kelley Elementary School.
Brandon’s father, Jeff Flanders, won the SB Contest two weeks ago. His collection of grand prizes features free pizza from six area pizzerias and gift certificates to Walnut Street Liquors and Tone Doctors Music on Locust Street, both in Lockport.
None of the nearly 500 coupons submitted got the score of Super Bowl XLI (Indianapolis Colts 29, Chicago Bears 17) exactly correct, however Flanders and seven other contestants were off by just one point.
Flanders, who resides at reside at 332 South St., picked the Colts to win, 29-16. Other contestants who were one-point off were Anthony Kneeppel of 822 16th St., Niagara Falls (Colts 28-17); Dina Kornell, 21 Cherry St., Lockport (Colts 28-17); Fred Duchow Jr., 34 Juniper St., Lockport (Colts 28-17); Tom Miller, 7326 Tonawanda Creek Road, Town of Lockport (Colts 28-17); Joe Brezinsky, 7153 Kinne Road, Town of Lockport (Colts 30-17); Scott Coleman, 1616 Carmer Road, Barker (Colts 28-17) and former Buffalo Jills cheerleader Christa Provenzano and the rest of the staff at Silver Sneakers, 6017 S. Transit Road, Town of Lockport (Colts 28-17).
Both Flanders and Kneeppel correctly picked the Bears to win the coin toss in the first tie-breaker question. However, Flanders correctly picked Peyton Manning to be the Super Bowl MVP in the second tie-breaker question and won. Kneepel had Marvin Harrison as the MVP.
“He was excited when he found out he won. He started jumping around, yelling, ‘Who knows football? Who knows football?’ ” said Jeff and Donna Flanders’ daughter, Felcia Flanders, 12, a seventh grader at Emmet Belknap Middle School.
“He had to work on Sunday Bowl Sunday, so my uncle taped the game for him. He was sort of confused about the coupon after the game, so I explained it to him, then he understood he was close,” she said.
What are the Flanders going to do with all that pizza?
“Eat it,” Felicia said simply.
