COLLEGE ROUNDUP (May 5): DeBacco signs with Newberry

Niagara Falls native Dale DeBacco, the all-time winningest wrestler for Niagara County Community College, signed a letter of intent Monday to compete at Newberry College, an NCAA Division II school in South Carolina.

DeBacco, a two-time All-American wrestler who also competes on the golf team, will receive his associates degree from NCCC on May 17. He holds Trailblazers career records for wins (83), riding times (33) and two-point near falls (42).

Newberry College has been recognized as the top wrestling team in the Carolinas, including all divisions, by Martin Flemeing, editor of The Takedown Report.

DeBacco earned five varsity letters at Niagara Falls High School. As a senior in 2006, he won the Section VI championship at 145 pounds, and was runner-up in the state competition. In 2005, he won the state title at 135 pounds.

NU’s Garcia named MAAC POY

Walter Garcia has been selected as Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men’s tennis player of the year, the league office announced Monday. Garcia finished the season 16-1 at first singles and was 5-0 in MAAC play. He ended the season on a 12-match winning streak in singles matches and won his last seven matches at second doubles with partner Alex Abji.

Roman Sillin joined Garcia on the all-conference first team. Collin Laffey and Marc Dickinson were second-team picks.

Shella Dargout and Vanja Lakic were second-team selectiond on the women’s all-conference team.
