COLLEGE ROUNDUP (Sept. 29): McKenna lifts NCCC baseball past MCC

Paul McKenna fired a 10-strikeout, one-walk two-hitter as the Trailblazers blanked Monroe Community College 8-0 in the opener of a Sanborn twinbill Sunday. Niagara scored six in the first, including a two-run single by Bo Aquilla. Sean Jamieson went 2-2 with two walks for Niagara.

Monroe held on to win the nightcap 3-2, wrapping up the Blazers’ fall season, despite Tyler Windish’s RBI triple in the sixth. The twinbill featured eight double plays, with each game completed in less than an hour and 45 minutes.

Women’s Soccer

Gartley does in OT for Niagara

Stephanie Gartley scored in the second overtime as the Niagara University women’s soccer team defeated Robert Morris (4-5-0) by a 2-1 count in front of a crowd of 375 at Niagara Field on Sunday afternoon.

Tonawanda native Caitlin Long sent a long header into the box, and Gartley was there to get her head on the ball for the winning goal for Niagara (7-2-1).

“I’m proud of the way the team kept fighting,” head coach Peter Veltri said. “They truly earned this victory, which is a testament to the commitment that these players have to Niagara soccer.”

Schultz gives D’Youville first win

Krissandra Schultz (Lew-Port) scored two second half goals Saturday as D’Youville came from behind to beat SUNYIT for its first win of the season. Brianna Smyth (North Tonawanda) assisted on the game-winning goal with 9:50 left.

On Sunday, Lockport-area product Libby Wein, who graduated from Mount St. Mary, had an assist but La Aroche had little trouble with D’Youville (1-8) in a 6-1 victory.

UB falls in double OT

Amy Lower’s shot was the difference as Ohio nipped Buffalo 2-1 in double overtime in Amherst on Sunday.

Brooke McCalla had the lone goal for the Bulls (4-3-1, 0-2 MAAC), who have now lost three straight.

Men’s soccer

Niagara falls 2-0 to Bonnies

The Purple Eagles had chances, but couldn’t put one home as they dropped a 2-0 decision to Little Three foe St. Bonaventure (2-2-3) on Sunday afternoon.

The Purple Eagles got outshot 8-2 in the first half and trailed after Dan Mitchell beat Jason Whitehead to give St. Bonaventure (2-2-3) a 1-0 edge. Niagara fell to 5-2-1.

Shuttleworth leads UB again

The University at Buffalo have now shut out six consecutive opponents after Bobby Shuttleworth extended his consecutive scoreless minutes streak to 549 in leading the Bulls to a 1-0 win over Duquesne on Sunday.

Martin John got the lone goal for Buffalo (9-2-1).

Kopf leads NU to doubles win

Steve Kopf (Grand Island) teamed with Joe Heckley for a doubles win over UB on Saturday. Roman Silin, Joseph Zelic, Marc Dickinson and Nick Bolea (North Tonawanda) were 1-1 in singles matches Saturday.

Hansen gets win for NU

Niagara’s Hilary Hansen defeated Fairfield’s Dana Postupack 8-1 in the consolation bracket of the Eastern Championships on Saturday at West Point.

Women’s volleyball

Bibler shines, but Eagles fall

Niagara fell in four sets at Rider on Sunday, settling for a weekend conference split. The Purple Eagles won the first set, but lost the next three, 22-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-22.

Freshman Kathy Bibler collected 16 kills to lead Niagara (3-12, 1-3 MAAC).

“Our passing was very inconsistent (Sunday),” head coach Susan Clements said. “We were not able to capitalize on their mistakes and we allowed them to dictate the match.”
