COLLEGE ROUNDUP (Oct. 2): NCCC women’s volleyball thinks pink

The Niagara County Community College women’s volleyball team wore pink warmups and hair ribbons Thursday, and sold bracelets to benefit breast cancer research before the Trailblazers defeating Elmira’s junior varsity team in three games.

“This is a cause very close to my heart,” coach Jill Faddoul said. “My grandmother died five years ago from breast cancer when I was pregnant with my daughter, so we want to do whatever we can to help increase awareness and prevention.”

NCCC (9-2) was led Thursday by Stephanie Meni (Niagara Falls) and Kathie Kreppenneck (Starpoint). Meni had six digs and Kreppenneck had 30 assists.

The college’s Foundations of Health class sold the bracelets, and will do again during Wednesday’s women’s soccer match with Erie, and against Oct. 21 when the volleyball team hosts Genesee.

The NCCC men’s team fell to 5-4 overall and 5-3 in Region III games with a 1-0 loss at Finger Lakes. “We were even for 75 minutes, and they snuck one in,” said coach Jon Williams, who praised the play of midfielder Kyle Weaver (Kenmore East) for marking Finger Lakes’ Nick Johnson, the nation’s top junior college scorer.

Do you agree with District Attorney Michael Violante’s decision to grant a plea deal to Sara Donovan, 23, the daughter of a North Tonawanda councilwoman, allowing her to avoid a DWI charge?

Yes. I believe the district attorney was acting in the “interest of justice” in agreeing to the plea deal.
No. Connect the dots — this decision was all about politics.
Don’t care. Aren’t plea deals offered to those charged with a crime all the time?
