PowerCats win reunion game for second straight year

NIAGARA FALLS — Another Labor Day All-Star Classic Reunion Alumni Basketball Game is in the books, and once again, participants are raving about the event.

“It was one of the best events I’ve seen in a while here,” said Robert Harris, who was selected as MVP of the main event.

“It was even better than the first year,” said Demondi Johnson, who along with Harris, helped the younger Niagara Falls High School alumni come back to beat their rivals from LaSalle 107-99 in overtime.

The Explorers led by 21 points at the half but the PowerCats clawed their way back in the second half. By the overtime period, LaSalle leadesr Carlos Bradberry (27 points) and Modie Cox (25 points) began dealing with leg cramps.

“Those guys are still in top shape,” said Harris (32 points), who is a year removed from playing for Texas Permian Basin (Division II) staying in shape for a possible overseas or developmental league contract. “Carlos Bradberry, he got all my respect. Modie Cox is in better shape than I am.

“It was good to see the older guys and compete against the younger ones,” Bradberry said.

The game at Niagara County Community College was organized by Luv4self Enterprises, with financial support from Jonny Flynn.

Luv4self is already planning next year’s game, hoping to get replica uniforms for the players and secure Niagara Falls High School as a venue.

“The use of the Wolvarena would be the last piece to complete this puzzle,” said Keith Muhammad, co-founder of Luv4self.

In the first alumni game, Jason Seaberry (21 points) led LaSalle to an 84-70 win and was named MVP. Mike Mitchell led Niagara Falls with 24 points.

In the high school all-star game, Jermaine Crumpton (16 points) and Larnell Briggs (14 points) led the Blue team to an 88-80. Crumpton was the MVP. Maurice Respress had 14 points in the losing effort.

In the Biddy all-star game, Camron Mason (25 points) was the MVP as the White Team won 72-64. Veedee Price had 18 points for the the Red team.

Awards were presented to Robert “Knuckles” Beadley for his work with Niagara Falls youth, and Flynn for his support of the event.
