The Wilson Historical Society will present a special concert by Dave Ruch on “The War of 1812 — Songs and Stories for New York and Beyond” at 7 p.m. April 23 at the Wilson Historical Society, 645 Lake St.
The concert is free and open to the general public. The event is made possible through Speakers in the Humanities, a program of the New York Council for the Humanities.
Dave Ruch is described as a special musician and performer — equal parts historian, entertainer, educator, comedian and folklorist. He sings and plays music for all ages on an intriguing assortment of instruments, including mandolin, banjo, guitar, jaw harp, bones and spoons.
Ruch presents a portrait of the War of 1812 through the songs and stories of the people, themselves. Ruch has dug deeply into archival recordings, diaries, old newspapers and other historical manuscripts to unearth a wealth of rarely heard music which, alongside some of the classics from the war, offers a rounded picture of the “Second War of Independence.”
The New York Council for the Humanities is a nonprofit, independent affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Through statewide collaborations, and programs and services that encourage imaginative thinking and critical inquiry, the Council works to ensure that the humanities are present in the intellectual and cultural life of every New Yorker.
