Women places 67 dead cats in freezer

SCHOHARIE, N.Y. — A woman who placed the bodies of 67 individually wrapped cats in her freezer will face animal cruelty charges in town court next month, Schoharie County Sheriff Tony Desmond said.

In addition, a check of Irene Van Dyke’s home in January found another 99 sickly and malnourished cats inside. Authorities said the 50-year-old woman began boarding unwanted pets only to see her affection for them spiral out of control.

The sheriff said many of the cats have been nursed back to good health at a local animal shelter and should be available for adoption soon. “The lady will be going to court, and I hope the outcome is such that she will get the help she needs,” Desmond said.
